XTERRA Fitness ERG200 Magnetic Rower | Convenient Storage

Rowing is one of the best full-body workouts, and the XTERRA Fitness ERG200 Magnetic Rower makes no exception! The continuous rowing motion requires your entire body, so it boosts your heart rate, muscle engagement, and calorie burn. Rowing is impact-free, and the intensity is completely user-controlled.

The ERG200 rower may be on a budget of magnetic-resistance rowers when it comes to price, but it certainly doesn’t seem like it when it comes to quality. Also, the magnetic-resistance system allows for smooth, quiet, and friction-free operation. Its flywheel weighs 9 lbs. It’s not extremely heavy, but this weight is enough to deliver consistent momentum for rowing.

The XTERRA Fitness ERG200 magnetic rower has a fitness monitor that tracks time, count, total count, and calories burned. You can also set a target based on the time elapsed, strokes completed, and calories burned. Therefore, you can try and beat previous records and see which goal you find the most motivational.

The seat is the first thing you will notice about the ERG200 rower’s comfort. It molds to fit your curves and is more significant than most rowers’ seats, making it much more comfortable to sit on. In addition, the foot pedals pivot so as not to strain your ankles while rowing, and the pulling handle comes padded so that your hands can endure much longer workout sessions comfortably.

ERG200 Frame Construction

The XTERRA Fitness ERG200 magnetic rower combines steel and aluminum elements in its construction. Its three base stabilizer parts and the front part of the frame that holds the drive system are steel-made.

The slide rail is aluminum to provide smooth movement of the seat. However, the pedals, the covers of the drive system, and the seat are made of ABS material.

This XTERRA rower is relatively large, especially lengthwise. With the frame fully assembled, it’s 72″ (183 cm) long and 20.7″ (52.5 cm) wide. However, the frame has a folding design; the rail with the seat folds up to save space. And with the rail folded, the machine’s length is reduced by half, offering better storage possibilities.

Along with these dimensions, XTERRA recommends assigning at least two clearance feet at the rear and on each side for safe operation and easy access.

The unit is not extremely heavy, weighing only 55.1 lbs (25 kg) when fully assembled. On top of that, its front base features transport wheels, so you can quickly relocate it once built.

Although it’s not heavy, the ERG200 offers excellent stability. Its rear base comes equipped with rotating, polygonal caps, which act as levelers, so you can correctly stabilize it on any surface.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, the machine’s rail is aluminum alloy. As a result, it’s exceptionally durable and can support users up to 250 lbs (113.3 kg) without bending. In addition, it’s also long enough to accommodate users up to 6’2″ (188 cm), allowing a complete leg extension and a correct rowing form.

The rail is not horizontal and has a slight elevation at the rear. Thus, it can be a plus, as it helps with a faster recovery motion and a slightly better workout for the leg muscles.

Finally, the steel parts within the rower’s construction feature a durable, rust-resistant black paint finish. However, its aluminum rail has a natural chrome polish finish.

Seat, Footrests, and Pulling Handle

The durable ABS seat is approximately 14″ (34 cm) wide and features a contoured and non-slip surface. It rests on a metallic frame that integrates two heavy-duty wheels with high-grade steel ball bearings. Its sliding motion along the rail is smooth and quiet, delivering a great feel as you row.

The ERG200 comes equipped with two oversized footrests. They have a pivoting design, allowing for a slight angle change of the feet with each stroke. In addition, they are heavy-duty ABS material, featuring an anti-slip surface and a heel guard for superior foot stability and positioning. Furthermore, they also come equipped with adjustable straps.

The machine’s pulling handle is a standard straight bar featuring rubberized grips for optimal comfort and adherence. However, since it’s an entry-level machine, it doesn’t have resistance controls or integrated HR pulse sensors. Instead, it’s attached to a heavy-duty nylon strap.

ERG200 Drive and resistance

The XTERRA Fitness ERG200 magnetic rower features a manual magnetic resistance system. Thus, it consists of a metallic flywheel and a magnetic brake that connects to the tension knob on top of the PVC casing via a steel wire. For instance, when turning the knob clockwise, the magnetic element will come closer to the flywheel, increasing resistance.

However, since the machine’s resistance is magnetic only, the resistance generated is constant without any air resistance elements; it does not vary with how stiff or fast you pull.

This rowing machine offers eight tension levels. Unfortunately, its highest resistance levels don’t provide the resistance required by a professional rower. However, the machine supplies light to medium cardio workout possibilities, which is excellent for anyone who wants a full-body workout.

The machine’s operation is smooth and quiet; this makes the machine suitable for apartment use. The integrated flywheel weighs 9 lbs. In addition, it’s not extremely heavy, but this weight is enough to deliver consistent momentum for rowing. Furthermore, it is also perimeter weighted, resulting in a smooth and steady motion.

This XTERRA rower uses a poly-v belt for transmission. Therefore, it doesn’t require any lubrication. In addition, it’s also quieter than a chain drive, and you won’t have to deal with issues like locked chain links and rusting.

Fitness Monitor

The XTERRA Fitness ERG200 magnetic rower has a fitness monitor that offers more than a simple unit. It has countdown functions for time, count, and calories. Therefore, you can set up a value for these workout metrics, and it will begin counting down until it reaches zero.

The monitor can track time, count (number of strokes completed during your current workout), total count (total strokes up to the present moment), and calories burned. Unfortunately, the monitor is not telemetric; therefore, it cannot read the pulse.

The display measures 3.7 inches diagonal; it’s an LCD but does not have an LED backlight. However, the monitor’s mount is angle-adjustable, so you can easily find a position allowing you to see the data correctly.

The fitness monitor is easy to use. It has three buttons: MODE, SET, and RESET. The MODE button allows you to scroll through the metrics and select the one you want to view on display.

You can also select the SCAN function, which will rotate all the values showing each one for 5 seconds. Next, the SET button allows you to set time, count, and calorie targets. And finally, via the reset button, you can clear all the monitor values to zero.

Since the machine’s resistance is manual, it doesn’t require a connection to a power circuit. Instead, the fitness monitor is battery-operated, requiring 2 AA batteries. It starts when it detects activity on the machine and has a sleep mode that will enter after 4 minutes of no signal input.

ERG200 Assembly and Maintenance

The machine’s main body with the flywheel, magnetic brake, belt, and pulling handle comes pre-assembled. Next, you must add the front base tube, connect the rail and the seat, the rear base stabilizer, the pedals, and the fitness monitor.

Consequently, it shouldn’t take more than an hour; it’s a straightforward task, and the supplied manual provides precise assembly instructions. In addition, all tools required for assembly also come with the machine.

The only maintenance required for this machine is keeping the rail clean and free of any small objects or textile fibers that may cause damage to the wheels or the beam itself. In addition, it’s advisable to periodically check the machine for loose or broken bolts and parts and retighten or replace them as needed.

  1. I want to start exercising, but I’m not sure if I’d keep it up. I would not want to spend a lot of money on equipment. So this is of particular interest.

I like that it folds up for storage, as that is one of the things that put me off from buying any exercise equipment.  The equipment takes up a lot of space just sitting there.

It might be the introductory level, but it certainly has more than enough features.

Your review certainly makes this rower appealing.

  2. It is great to come across a foldable rowing machine, so thanks for this review on the XTerra Fitness ERG Magnetic Rower. I recently got rid of a very old rower, mainly because it was too big and couldn’t easily be stored away.

This ERG200 would be perfect for me, and it also has wheels that I can move around when I want to put away or use in different parts of the house.

  3. The Xterra Fitness ERG200 rowing machine seems like a very affordable rower to have as part of your home gym. The foot pedals can make it easier on the ankles. The eight different resistance levels will cater to varying fitness levels and the workout that is required. With built-in wheels to move the rower around, you can quickly position it where you want it.

The rower can store away when not in use with a foldable construction. The many pros of the rower far outweigh the few cons. Thanks for sharing this great review.
