R49 Frame Construction
The ECHANFIT R49 Pro rowing machine features a steel frame combining rectangular and cylindrical tubes in its construction. In addition, all the steel parts come coated with a rust-resistant grey paint finish. Also, the front part of the unit that holds the drive and resistance elements has a set of large thermoplastic guards.
The ECHANFIT R49 Pro rower is a fairly small fitness machine compared with other similar models. Its assembled footprint is 64.6″L x 16.3″W (164 x 41 cm). However, it’s advisable to leave at least two feet of clearance on each side of the rail and at the rear for easy access.
The exact length of the rail is not specified, but ECHANFIT recommends this rower for users up to 6’3″ (190 cm). Also, its maximum user weight limit is 300 lbs (136 kg).
The rower does not have a folding design. However, it can store vertically if necessary, resting on its front stabilizer and a small rubber pad integrated into the front part of the drive casing.
The unit is relatively light. It only weighs approx. 55 lbs (25 kg), so one person can easily carry and assemble the rower. Also, once completed, it relocates quickly since its front base integrates a set of small wheels.
Seat and other parts
The ECHANFIT R49 Pro rowing machine comes equipped with a pretty comfortable seat. Its top section features a cushion with approximately 1.6″ (4 cm) foam padding to reduce the impact on your tailbone. In addition, the cushion has a durable vinyl cover which is also sweatproof.
The seat frame is steel-made. It integrates three sets of wheels. Two slides are on top of the rail, while the third one is at the bottom for extra stability.
The wheels integrate ball bearings and have an outer rubber layer for reduced noise and smooth seat travel. In addition, the rail also has two sets of bumpers at the front and rear to prevent the seat from sliding more than necessary.
The unit’s rail slants forward. Therefore, the machine provides a slightly better workout for the legs. However, this also means that the seat is a bit higher when close to the rear end of the rail. Its maximum height is approx—12″ (30 cm) above the floor.
This ECHANFIT rower comes with a set of large footrests. They attach to a curved steel bar connecting to the frame’s bottom front section. The pedal trays are durable ABS material. They are non-adjustable. In addition, they have heel guards, a textured surface, and adjustable straps to provide foot stability during rowing.
The unit’s footrests do not pivot or change their angle, and they are at an angle of approx—45 ° to provide optimal positioning for your feet during rowing.
The pulling handle of the rower consists of a short straight bar attached to a heavy-duty abrasion-resistant nylon strap. Thus, the unit’s drive system doesn’t require any lubrication. Unfortunately, the pulling handle does not have pulse sensors like some of the most expensive rowers, and the included fitness monitor does not have a pulse reading function.
R49 Resistance system
The ECHANFIT R49 Pro rowing machine features a magnetic resistance system similar to upright exercise bikes. It consists of a magnetic brake integrated into the front section of the rower and connected to the tension dial.
As you turn the dial clockwise, the magnets move closer to the internal flywheel, which increases the rowing difficulty. Conversely, if you turn the tension knob counterclockwise, the magnetic brake moves away from the flywheel, which reduces the workload.
The resistance system is manual (mechanical). Therefore, you don’t need an adapter or an external power source to adjust the resistance. Unfortunately, on the other hand, the rower cannot change the resistance automatically and does not have any pre-set programs.
The ECHANFIT R49 Pro offers 16 levels of resistance. It delivers a reasonably light rowing difficulty on the lowest level, which is great for recovery training or a workout warmup. Conversely, the 16th level of resistance provides considerably more resistance, which is excellent for anyone who wants to improve strength, stamina, and cardiovascular shape.
The main advantage of the magnetic resistance system is that the brake does not touch the flywheel, and no fan or water tank generates noise during usage. Thus, the machine is tranquil and great for apartment use.
Last but not least, it’s important to note that the ECHANFIT R49 does not offer a dynamic response during rowing. For instance, this is the case for any full-magnetic rower (without water or air resistance elements). Thus, the resistance depends not on how fast you pull the handle but on the selected tension level.
Moreover, this is not necessarily a downside. Still, the rowing sensation is not as close to the rowing of a real boat, similar to a water-resistance rower or air-resistance rower.
Fitness monitor
The ECHANFIT R49 Pro rowing machine comes equipped with a simple fitness monitor. It features an LCD without a backlight. It tracks time, count, total count, count per minute, and calories burned. The display divides into two sub-section. The top section shows the strokes for the current workout, and the bottom section shows all the other metrics.
Furthermore, the monitor does not have pre-set programs or online connectivity. However, it is straightforward to use. It only has one button. By pressing the button repeatedly, you can change the workout metric displayed on the bottom section of the screen.
This way, you can also select Scan Mode; in Scan Mode, the metrics on the bottom rotate automatically, each appearing on display for a few seconds. The button also covers the reset function of the monitor. So you can press and hold it for a few seconds to clear all the values to zero except the Total Count function.
Unfortunately, the monitor does not have a pulse reading function, nor does not show distance or split time/500. It is battery-powered, and the batteries come with the rower. You can start it up by pressing the button, but it also starts up automatically when it detects activity on the rower. It also turns off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity on the machine.
R49 Assembly and Maintenance
The front part of the rower with all the drive and resistance elements comes pre-assembled. So, you only need to attach the front base stabilizer, insert the seat on the rail, and add the rear stabilizer, the footrests, and the fitness monitor.
Consequently, this shouldn’t take more than 30-40 minutes of your time. The manual provides clear assembly instructions and all the necessary tools for the rowing machine.
Keeping the rower clean, especially the rail is essential to prevent damage to the seat wheels. The internal maintenance parts do not require lubrication or any maintenance. It is also advisable to periodically check for loose bolts and parts and retighten them as needed.

I appreciated the detailed description of this rowing machine. I am not really familiar with the magnetic resistance mechanism, but I assume that it makes the machine smoother and quieter to operate than an air resistance mechanism. With some joint pain as I get older, I find that running or walking on a track or treadmill to be difficult. This might well be a great alternative. I imagine that the cardio workout can be great with increased tension, yet there is no pounding of joints. The one thing that I didn’t see in the article was pricing. I am going to explore this exercise option further. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for sharing all of your valuable insights on this rowing machine. It’s nice to know that this rower has solid feet pedals and a comfortable seat. Those are always things that I’ve found problematic with other rowing machines that I have previously tried. Many are just so uncomfortable to sit on for too long. Or your feet end up slipping out of the pedals. This machine looks like it has a lot of good options for the price. I’ll have to check it out.
