Marcy Water Rowing Machine NS-6070RW | Limitless Resistance

The Marcy Water Rowing Machine NS-6070RW highlights an entirely durable steel tubing frame. Its sliding rail has a maximum user weight limit of up to 300 lbs (136 kg), comparable to other models. However, the assembled rower is genuinely enormous, particularly the length. It is approximately 78.75″ (200 cm) long and 22″ (56 cm) wide, so it may not fit well in a small room.

The NS-6070RW features a rugged polycarbonate 6-level water tank with a 16-blade impeller of rock-solid ABS material. As a result, the machine’s resistance is straightforward. However, the resistance relies upon the speed of the impeller. So, the faster you pull the handle, the impeller turns quicker and creates more resistance.

The Marcy Water Rowing Machine NS-6070RW has a mid-range fitness monitor that tracks time, time/500m, distance, strokes per minute (SPM), total strokes, calories, and pulse. You will need a 5.3 kHz HR chest strap. Unfortunately, this accessory does not come with the rowing machine. In addition, the monitor has two workout programs to keep you motivated.

The NS-6070W comes equipped with a seat contoured for optimal comfort. Its top is high-density foam; it is firm, however, not incredibly hard. This Marcy rower has non-adjustable footrests made of thick, strong ABS material. The pulling handle features an ergonomic design. It is urethane-covered for an improved grip and attached to an abrasion-resistant nylon strap.

NS-6070W Frame Construction

Although not commercial grade, the Marcy NS-6070RW features a sturdy steel frame. Its sliding rail has a maximum user weight limit of up to 300 lbs (136 kg), a bit more than similar models. In addition, the frame features a corrosion-resistant, black paint finish, with the “MarcyPro” logo painted white/gray.

Marcy Water Rowing Machine NS-6070RW

The fully assembled machine is relatively large, especially lengthwise. It is approximately 78.75″ (200 cm) long and 22″ (56 cm) wide, so it may not fit too well in a small room. MarcyPro advises leaving a clearance of at least two feet around the unit to ease access and safe usage.

The unit’s sliding rail is approximately 40″ (101 cm), while the seat travel length is approx. 36″ (91 cm). Thus, the unit should accommodate users up to 6’2″ (188 cm) with no problem, allowing a complete leg extension and a correct rowing motion.

The Marcy NS-6070RW lacks the elevated front and rear bases characteristic of several similar rowers. Thus, its seat is closer to the floor (approximately 12″ – 30 cm). Also, its sliding rail is slightly inclined forward, leading to a faster recovery motion and extra difficulty for the leg push phase.

This rower’s exact weight is not specified, but it weighs more than 80 lbs (36 kg) without water in the tank. Therefore, the boxed unit’s transport may require two people, but one person can complete the assembly. Once finished, its relocation is easy; its front base features transport wheels.

The machine’s frame does not fold; it stores vertically, resting on the front wheels and the extra stabilizer attached to the front frame section’s top. The unit’s base becomes approximately 20″ x 22″ (51 x 56 cm) when stored vertically with the monitor arm folded. If you’re wondering, the water can remain in the tank when stored.

The last aspect to note is the machine’s rear and front base stabilizers. Its rear base comes equipped with two adjustable levelers, while the front base rests on two large rubberized pads, similar to those on some other rowers.

Seat and other parts

The Marcy water rowing machine NS-6070RW has a seat designed for optimal comfort. Its top is high-density foam; it is firm but not extremely hard. It is also contoured to minimize soreness, provide better positioning for the user, and prevent sliding backward from it.

The seat base is steel-made. As mentioned earlier, the whole seat assembly and the sliding rail have a maximum 300-pound (136 kg) user weight limit. In addition, it integrates three sets of wheels, two on top of the rail and the other under the rail, to provide extra stability.

The wheels feature an outer rubber shell and internal sealed ball bearings to smooth seat motion and minimize noise. Also, the side panels conceal all the seat wheels to provide maximum safety.

This Marcy rower has two non-adjustable footrests made of thick, durable ABS material. In addition, they are large enough to accommodate athletic shoes of all sizes. Furthermore, they also have adjustable straps and heel guards for improved foot stability.

The machine’s footrests do not pivot on their axis. Their metallic base welds directly to the mainframe. They sit at an optimal angle of approx—50 °, designed to provide firm support for the leg push phase.

The pulling handle features an ergonomic design. It curves slightly towards the user to provide a more natural positioning for the hands and reduce the wrists’ stress during rowing. In addition, it is urethane-covered for an improved grip and attached to an abrasion-resistant nylon strap.

In addition, the pulling handle does not integrate any HR pulse sensors; however, the fitness monitor can monitor pulse rate using a chest strap.

NS-6070W Water tank and resistance system

The Marcy Water Rowing Machine NS-6070RW has a durable polycarbonate water tank. Its exact capacity is not specified, but it is similar to other rowers’ tanks in this feature range, so it should be approximately 4 gallons (15 liters).

The tank integrates a 16-blade impeller made of heavy-duty ABS material, which is the primary resistance-generating element of the unit. The impeller connects to a pulley system and a bungee cord attached to the bottom of the front base frame, making its reverse rotation possible.

The machine’s resistance system is simple. Pulling the handle with the strap, the impeller spins inside the tank filled with water, adding resistance to rowing motion. Unfortunately, the tank does not have an adjustable resistance system like the FDF Pacific Challenge AR rower.

However, you can still adjust the overall water resistance by adding or removing water manually from the tank. There are six distinct water levels marked on the tank.

Like any other water-resistance rower, the Marcy NS-6070RW machine delivers a dynamic response during rowing. However, the resistance depends on the speed of the impeller. Therefore, the impeller will spin faster and generate more resistance if you pull the handle faster. Thus, it leads to a sensation similar to the rowing of a real boat.

Last but not least, the rower generates some noise during usage. However, the noise level is low, and the sound is far from annoying, which may be true with some air-resistance rowers.

Fitness Monitor

This Marcy rowing machine comes equipped with a mid-range fitness monitor. It is battery-powered and requires two AA batteries. The LCD features multiple windows to show all the metrics, so you don’t have to continuously select the ones you want to view.

It tracks time, time/500m, distance, strokes per minute (SPM), total strokes, calories, and pulse. The distance displays as meters (you cannot change it to miles or yards).

While for the pulse reading, you will need a 5.3 kHz HR chest strap. Furthermore, it does not come with a rower. In addition, the machine does not have integrated HR pulse sensors in the pulling handle, so the fitness monitor can only read your pulse using a wireless chest strap or armband.

Unfortunately, the fitness monitor lacks Bluetooth or other online capabilities. In addition, it also isn’t compatible with any fitness apps. However, it has two workout programs to keep you motivated. The first program is Manual, which has two workout modes. You can select goal settings for the first mode for a time, distance, strokes, calories, or pulse.

As mentioned earlier, it’s important to note that you can only select a goal value for one of the functions. So, for example, if you set a goal value for time, you won’t be able to set a goal for distance, strokes, etc. However, in the second workout mode, you press Start and begin rowing, and the monitor will track all your workout metrics.

The second program is Race. As its name suggests, this program creates a racing format in which you must compete against the computer. It displays the user and the CPU as two boat icons on the center display, and when the program starts, the two icons begin to move.

The program has 15 difficulty levels; the first level has a default timer of 8 minutes, while the 15th has a default timer of 1 minute. The distance is adjustable for each level. The Race begins when you hit Start and ends whenever you or the PC reach the distance goal set for that Race.

The fitness monitor also has a Recover function, which requires an HR chest strap. Unfortunately, this accessory does not come with the rowing machine. It measures the heart rate cooldown at the end of the workout and, based on the result, will give you a fitness rating between F1 (excellent) and F6 (poor).

The Alarm and Sleep Mode are two other notable functions of the rower’s monitor. You can set the Alarm to notify you that you must begin your training. The Sleep Mode starts after 4 minutes of inactivity on the machine. In addition, the monitor displays the current date, room temperature, and clock during sleep mode.

NS-6070W Assembly and Maintenance

The rower’s water tank and other drive and resistance elements are attached to the front frame section pre-assembled. Therefore, you only need to attach the seat to the sliding rail, connect the rail to the front central part of the rower, close it with the rear stabilizer, attach the fitness monitor, and add water inside the tank.

Therefore, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes of your time. All the necessary tools come with the machine, and the manual provides precise assembly instructions.

It is advisable for maintenance to keep the unit’s rail clean to prevent any seat rollers damage. Unfortunately, the rower does not include chlorine pills for water treatment, and the manual specifies not to use bleach or pool chlorine pills.

On a personal note concerning water treatment, I advise filling the tank with bottled water. To prevent algae in the tank, I have used Aquatabs. They are for purifying small amounts of water for drinking, and as you only want to inhibit algae, you only need 1‐2 tablets every six months.

Otherwise, a regular water change may be a good call. For example, I change the water in my rower’s water tank about once a year, although I think it would last longer.

And finally, it is advisable to periodically check for loose bolts and parts and re-tighten them if necessary.

  1. The Marcy water rowing machine looks incredible. I never knew you get rowing machines to place water in the machine to help with weight training and give that natural rowing feeling. It is incredible how technology advances. Must a person change the water regularly, though, to avoid any system problems?

    • Hi Bernard, thanks for stopping by. There are purification tablets to put in the water container once every six months.

They are for purifying small amounts of water for drinking, and as you are only looking to inhibit algae, you only need 1‐2 ppm, so two tablets will suffice every six months.

  2. Fascinating, Robert! Thank you for your piece of advice for cardio training. This could be useful in my gym if I’ll ever have one in my own home. I wouldn’t say I like going to a public gym with many other people, but I like doing workouts.
Also, I see that you gave a high rating, and you seem someone who knows a lot about the stuff.

    Thanks,

  3. This is a very detailed review of the Marcy Water NS-6070RW Rowing machine. With so many more people wanting to exercise at home, this could be a great rowing machine for those with the space for this giant machine. However, could the rowing machine be used outside undercover for those that do not have space indoors, or will adverse weather affect the machine’s mechanisms?

Great tip on using purification tablets or chloride to keep the water fresh. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Great tool exercise equipment for your health, stamina cardio, too lose weight.  You can always exercise at home  24 hours a day, without driving to the gym with its crowds of people on every machine to exercise.  I have rarely ever done rowing exercises, but it’s a great cardio fitness apparatus for a healthy body. This Marcy water machine will be excellent to have in an oversized garage.  I think it’s a good tool for cardio health.
