Body-Solid G1S Home Gym: Compact Strength Training for Small Spaces

If you’re tight on space but don’t want to compromise on a full-body workout, the Body-Solid G1S home gym might be just what you need. Unlike many weight stack gym systems that occupy an entire room, the G1S features a compact design that measures only 49 inches in length and 36 inches in width (125 x 92 cm). This makes it a practical option for apartments, condos, or any home where space is limited.

Space Requirements and Setup

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

While the G1S itself has a small footprint, you’ll need a bit more room around it to use it safely. Body-Solid recommends a usage area of 73 inches by 47 inches (185 x 119 cm) to provide sufficient space for a full range of motion and to move around the machine comfortably. The assembled height is 83.5 inches (212 cm), so it will fit in a room with standard seven-foot ceilings, but the fit will be snug.

Built to Last: Frame and Finish

Body-Solid constructed the G1S with a sturdy 12-gauge steel frame, finished in a rugged, electrostatically applied powder coat that resists scratches and corrosion. The dark gray color gives it a sleek, modern appearance that suits most home settings.

Stability and Durability

Weighing in at 323 pounds (146.5 kg) when fully assembled, the G1S is solid and stable—no need to bolt it to the floor. The rear base features rubberized pads, protecting your floors and providing extra durability for years of use.

Comfort Features

Body-Solid didn’t overlook comfort, either. The leg developer comes with 4-inch (10 cm) foam rollers for smooth, comfortable leg extensions. The chest press station, short bar, and lat bar are all finished with a rubber foam coating, so you can focus on your workout without worrying about grip or hand fatigue.

The Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a reliable, space-saving home gym that doesn’t compromise on quality or comfort, the Body-Solid G1S is definitely worth considering. Its compact size, robust construction, and user-friendly features make it a standout option for anyone looking to build strength at home—even when space is limited.

Adjustable Seating: Custom Fit for Every User

The Body-Solid home gym stands out for its easy-to-use adjustable seat, designed to fit a wide range of users. With a telescoping, chrome-plated seat post offering multiple height positions, you can quickly find the right setting for your body type and exercise needs. Therefore, users up to 6’3″ (190 cm) can work out comfortably, with the seat height ensuring proper alignment and body positioning for better results and reduced strain during workouts.

Backrest and Ergonomic Support

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

While the backrest on many Body-Solid home gyms is fixed in place, it features DuraFirm™ pads that offer outstanding lumbar support. Its heavy padding helps prevent lower back strain and keeps you comfortable throughout your session. The design emphasizes ergonomic support, so you can focus on your reps without worrying about discomfort.

Thick, Durable Padding and Tough Upholstery

Both the seat and backrest have 2-inch (5 cm) thick DuraFirm™ padding. It is known for its comfort and resilience, allowing you to train hard without sacrificing support. The upholstery is crafted from heavy-duty, waterproof vinyl, which not only withstands sweat and regular use but also makes cleaning a breeze, ensuring your equipment stays in top shape for years.

Designed for Comfort, Built for Performance

Body-Solid engineers its home gyms not just for adjustability, but for everyday comfort and durability. The thick, supportive cushions and quick-adjust seat post make it easy to transition between exercises and users. Whether you’re looking for ergonomic support or long-lasting construction, Body-Solid’s adjustable seat systems deliver on both fronts.

Ready to elevate your workouts? The Body-Solid adjustable seat ensures you’ll always find your fit.

The Body-Solid G1S Home Gym Pulley System and Cables: What You Need to Know

If you’re shopping for a compact, all-in-one gym, the Body-Solid G1S is probably on your radar. One of the biggest questions people have is: how good are the pulleys and cables? After all, these are the parts you’ll put to work on almost every set. Here’s what you need to know, in plain English.

The Pulley System: Built for Smooth, Reliable Action

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

Engineers thoughtfully designed the G1S pulley system to provide a smooth, consistent resistance throughout your workout. The pulleys themselves are 4.5 inches in diameter, made from impact-resistant, fiberglass-reinforced nylon. What does that actually mean? They’re tough. They won’t crack or shatter from regular use, and they will last.

Each pulley features precision-machined steel ball bearings, ensuring smooth motion and minimizing wear on the cables. You’ll notice this right away when performing high-rep movements—there’s no annoying sticking or jerky motion.

It’s a big deal if you’re used to the grindy feel of cheaper home gym setups. The system is also “no-cable-change,” which means you won’t waste time fiddling with cables between exercises; it’s all set up for easy transitions.

The Cables: Commercial-Grade Strength and Longevity

Cables are the unsung heroes of any multi-gym. On the G1S, they’re not an afterthought. Body-Solid uses military-spec, steel aircraft cables rated at a whopping 2,200 pounds of tension strength. Body-Solid wrapped these cables in a nylon sheath, which keeps things running quietly and minimizes wear.

The advantage? Expect years of rigorous training before you even need to consider replacements. Body-Solid also designed these cables for low maintenance, so you’ll spend more time lifting and less time fixing.

Real-World Durability

User reviews back up the manufacturer’s claims. Many note how smooth and sturdy the cables and pulleys feel, even after years of daily use. The combination of heavy-duty hardware and innovative design means you’re unlikely to encounter cable fraying or pulley failure if you follow basic maintenance guidelines.

Maintenance Tips

To keep the system running at its best, Body-Solid recommends a quick visual inspection of the cables and pulleys before each workout. Look for signs of fraying or broken strands—though with the G1S, this is pretty rare. Ensure all bolts are tight and avoid allowing the weight plates to slam down, as this can cause stress to the cables over time.

The Bottom Line:  Body-Solid engineered the G1S Home Gym pulley system and cables for people who want a gym that works, day in and day out. With commercial-grade cables, tough nylon pulleys, and an innovative, no-fuss design, you can count on smooth, safe workouts for years. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned lifter, the G1S sets a high bar for home gym durability and performance.

The Body-Solid G1S Home Gym: A Deep Dive Into Its Workout Stations

If you’re looking for a home gym that doesn’t eat up your entire living room but still delivers a legit full-body workout, the Body-Solid G1S Home Gym is worth a closer look. This compact powerhouse manages to squeeze an impressive range of exercises into a single, user-friendly machine—making it a top pick for anyone serious about strength training at home.

Five Workout Stations, Endless Possibilities

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

The G1S is built around a 160 lb. selectorized weight stack and features five primary workout stations. Each one is designed to target major muscle groups from different angles, allowing you to work your entire body without needing to switch between multiple pieces of equipment. Here’s what you get:

1. Multi-Grip Press Arm Station

This is the heart of the G1S, engineered for chest presses, incline presses, shoulder presses, and even mid-row exercises. The multi-position hand grips allow you to tailor your movement for maximum comfort and muscle engagement, whether you’re pushing for chest gains or targeting deltoid definition.

2. Lat Pulldown / High Pulley Station

This station focuses on your upper back, lats, and arms. Use it for classic lat pulldowns, triceps pressdowns, cable crossovers, and a bunch of other high-pulley exercises. The included lat bar makes it easy to switch grip styles and target different muscles.

3. Ab Crunch / Mid Pulley Station

Sculpting your core is simple with the mid pulley. It’s perfect for ab crunches, oblique twists, and seated rows. You can even leverage it for a variety of single-arm and twisting exercises, giving your abs and mid-back plenty of attention.

4. Leg Extension / Leg Curl Station

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

Leg day? Handled. This station lets you perform both leg extensions and seated leg curls, targeting your quadriceps and hamstrings. The padded rollers and smooth pivot points keep your knees happy and your movement fluid.

5. Seated Row / Low Pulley Station

Down at the base of the machine, the low pulley station shines for seated rows, biceps curls, upright rows, and more. It’s versatile enough for everything from calf raises to upright rows, making it a go-to for finishing your workout with some serious pump.

What Else Should You Know?

  • Accessories Included: The G1S comes with a revolving lat bar, straight bar, ankle strap, ab/triceps strap, and even a workout DVD and exercise chart to get you started.
  • Smooth Operation: All stations utilize self-lubricating bronze bushings and biomechanically accurate pivot points, ensuring the G1S moves smoothly and quietly, even after years of use.
  • Compact Footprint: The G1S is designed to fit where other home gyms can’t, making it ideal for apartments and tight spaces without sacrificing variety in strength training.
  • Over 40 Exercises: With clever use of the pulleys and attachments, you can perform more than 40 unique exercises, covering everything from chest and back to arms, legs, and core.

Final Thoughts: The Body-Solid G1S Home Gym strikes the perfect balance between size, versatility, and durability. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned lifter, the five well-designed stations and included accessories make it easy to keep your workouts fresh and compelling—all without leaving home.

If you want a gym-quality workout without the space requirements of a gym, the G1S is tough to beat. Body-Solid built it to last, is easy to use, and offers a total-body training experience that will keep you motivated for years to come.

Everything You Need to Know About the Body-Solid G1S Home Gym Weight Resistance System

If you’re on the hunt for a reliable home gym that feels close to commercial equipment, the Body-Solid G1S is probably on your radar. One of the most important factors to consider is the weight resistance system—how it works, the amount of resistance you receive, and what that means for your workouts. Let’s break it down in plain English.

What Kind of Resistance Does the Body-Solid G1S Use?

The G1S features a classic, selectorized weight stack system. That means you’re working with absolute weights—not bands, water, or air. There’s a column of weight plates (alloy, precisely machined and engineered for consistency) stacked neatly, and you use a pin to select the desired resistance for each exercise. It is the same kind of system you’ll find on most gym machines, so if you’re used to commercial setups, you’ll feel right at home.

The Included Weight Stack

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

Out of the box, the G1S comes with a 160-pound selectorized weight stack. Body-Solid made each plate of alloy, machine-drilled for smooth operation, and cushioned with nylon bushings to keep the movement quiet and friction-free.

Because the stack is selectorized, changing the resistance is as simple as moving the pin to the desired plate—no need to swap out plates or fiddle with extra equipment during a workout. It allows for supersets and quick weight adjustments effortlessly, which is ideal if you’re sharing the gym or doing varied routines.

How Does the Resistance Feel?

Thanks to the high-quality pulleys, aircraft-grade cables, and those smooth alloy plates, the resistance feels ultra-consistent. Reviewers actually mention that the G1S delivers the kind of friction-free, reliable motion you expect from high-end gym machines. No jerky movements, no weird lag at the top or bottom of each rep. That’s partly due to the design, so you’re getting as close to the full selected weight as possible.

What Exercises Can You Do With the 160lb Stack?

Engineers designed the G1S to target every major muscle group, offering over 40 exercise options. Whether you’re doing chest presses, rows, pulldowns, curls, leg extensions, or ab crunches, the whole stack is available for every station. That 160 pounds covers a pretty wide range of strength levels for most home users, from beginners to intermediate lifters.

Can You Upgrade the Weight Stack?

Currently, the standard G1S doesn’t list an official upgrade kit for the weight stack. Most users find the 160-pound stack sufficient for home use, especially given the smooth resistance. If you’re a serious powerlifter, you might eventually want something heavier, but for general fitness and strength training, 160 pounds is plenty.

Smooth, Quiet, and Built to Last

One thing nearly everyone agrees on: Body-Solid built the G1S’s weight resistance system for the long haul. The alloy plates, precision bushings, and sturdy selector pin ensure you won’t experience clunky movement or breakdowns after a few months. And because the resistance mechanism is all internal, it’s pretty quiet—no clanging plates or squeaky pulleys to annoy you or your neighbors.

Final Thoughts: The Body-Solid G1S’s weight resistance system is everything you want in a home gym: simple to use, smooth in operation, and tough enough to last for years. The 160-pound selectorized stack, premium materials, and commercial-style design make it a standout for anyone looking to bring the gym experience home. If you want a machine that doesn’t cut corners on resistance, this one checks all the boxes.

How to Structure a Home Gym Workout

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

If you’re new to total-body routines, a good rule of thumb is to train each major muscle group 2–3 times per week, allowing at least 48 hours of rest between sessions for any given muscle group. For most people, a total-body workout using the G1S three times a week is a solid starting point.

A sample beginner routine on the G1S might look like this:

  1. Chest Press – 3 sets of 10 reps
  2. Lat Pulldown – 3 sets of 10 reps
  3. Leg Extension – 3 sets of 12 reps
  4. Seated Row – 3 sets of 10 reps
  5. Ab Crunch – 3 sets of 15 reps
  6. Bicep Curl (Low Pulley) – 2 sets of 12 reps
  7. Tricep Pressdown – 2 sets of 12 reps

Always warm up with 5–10 minutes of light cardio or some dynamic stretching, and start each exercise with a lighter weight if you’re new to the movement.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Body-Solid G1S

  • Adjust the seat and pads for your height before starting each exercise. Proper alignment means better results and fewer injuries.
  • Use the full range of motion for each movement. Don’t rush; controlled, steady reps work best.
  • Switch up your routine every 4–6 weeks. Try new exercises or change the order to keep things fresh.
  • Keep track of your progress. Whether it’s more reps, more weight, or just better form, celebrate the wins.

Guide to Assembling and Maintaining Your Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

So you’ve decided to bring the gym home with the Body-Solid G1S. Smart move. It’s compact, versatile, and built to last — but only if you set it up right and show it a little love over the years. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned DIY-er, this guide will walk you through assembly and maintenance, so you can spend less time scratching your head and more time working out.

Unboxing and Prepping for Assembly

Before you crack open the boxes, clear a good amount of space — the G1S takes up about 49” x 36” on the floor and stands 83” tall once assembled, so give yourself room to work. Lay out all the parts and hardware, and retrieve the official assembly manual. Take a few minutes to read through the instructions from start to finish. Trust me, it’ll save you time later.

Step-by-Step Assembly Tips

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

1. Follow the Manual Closely

The G1S manual is your best friend. Go step-by-step and don’t skip ahead — some parts only fit one way, and backtracking is a pain. Each step in the manual is illustrated, which significantly helps.

2. Organize Hardware

Set out bolts, washers, and nuts by size. The biggest gripe users have is that the directions can be confusing, especially with the hardware. Separating everything first will make matching up the right pieces much easier.

3. Assemble the Frame First

Start with the main base and upright supports. Tighten bolts only finger-tight at first, so you can adjust the parts as needed when adding other sections. Once everything is in place, go back and tighten them fully.

4. Add the Weight Stack and Cables

The weight stack is centered and uses selectorized plates with a simple pin system. When running the cables, keep them untwisted and follow the routing diagrams exactly. A cable out of place can cause slack or uneven resistance.

5. Attach the Stations and Accessories

Install the press arms, lat bar, leg developer, and other stations. The seat and pads attach last. Double-check all bolts, especially those that get daily use.

6. Final Safety Checks

Once assembled, go over the entire unit. Ensure that every nut and bolt is tight, cables are routed smoothly, and moving parts glide smoothly without sticking. If the weight stack feels off or the cables have slack, recheck the routing and connections.

Common Assembly Pitfalls (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Hardware confusion: Take the time to sort bolts and screws before you begin.
  • Cable issues: If your cables are loose or have no resistance, retrace your steps — usually, a pulley is out of order or a cable is routed incorrectly.
  • Missing parts: Double-check boxes before calling support, but if you’re genuinely missing something, Body-Solid’s customer service is responsive.

Maintenance: Keeping Your G1S in Top Shape

Body-Solid G1S Home Gym

Your G1S will last for years if you give it some basic care:

1. Inspect Regularly

Before every workout, check that all nuts, bolts, and pop pins are tight. Inspect cables for signs of wear or fraying; replace them if damage is noticed.

2. Clean Moving Parts

Wipe down the machine after workouts with a mild cleaning solution. Sweat can lead to corrosion if ignored. Keep the weight stack guide rods and other moving parts dust-free for smooth operation.

3. Lubricate as Needed

Every few months, lightly lubricate pulleys, guide rods, and other moving parts with a silicone-based lubricant. This keeps everything running quietly and reduces wear.

4. Stay Clear of Moving Parts

Make sure nothing is obstructing the movement of cables or weight stacks. Don’t let kids or pets play around the gym when it’s in use.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Loose cables: Usually fixed by retracing the cable path and checking pulley installation.
  • Weight stack sticking: Clean and lubricate the guide rods.
  • Squeaks or grinding noises: Lubricate moving parts and check for worn bushings or pulleys.

If you encounter issues that you can’t resolve, the official manual includes a troubleshooting section, and you can also contact Body-Solid’s support team (Body-Solid Maintenance).

Wrapping Up: The Body-Solid G1S is an excellent investment in your fitness journey, but it only pays off if you assemble and maintain it with care. Take your time during setup, keep up with regular maintenance, and it’ll deliver smooth, safe workouts for years to come. If you want the specifics straight from the source, always keep the official manual handy.

Happy lifting!

I wanted to research and see if this S1G Home Gym would work fine in a rather small room, and I’m excited to find out it does. And there are so many exercises available! Thanks for this review.

  5. It looks like you picked the perfect time to be presenting this review!  With this COVID19 pandemic crisis, people are seriously looking at other options for their health and fitness needs. My wife is a personal trainer, and we have had to move most of her clients to an online program. Who knows when this will end or if it will happen again. So people are going to be interested in finding exercise equipment for home use. I know it may seem like a significant investment, but the more significant consideration should be. What will it cost you NOT to take care of your health and fitness? Our gym is closed right now until who knows when and we have to work out from home. This is a great time to start preparing for any future crisis, and you can always have a personal trainer come into your home. They will love you already having the equipment to use.

  6. A while back, I realized that I had been neglecting my upper body strength, even though I was jogging every day and started using something similar. I wish this apartment building that I live in had one of these.

I was curious to find out the cost, so I clicked over to Amazon, and wouldn’t you know it they’re out of stock. So no price was given. You might want to put in a new link.

It is a good review very comprehensive, but possibly a little feature heavy. I would have liked a bit of coaching and advice on muscles and repetitions etc. For example, I did too much the first time out and had to wait for a week before going back.

    Good work.

    Garry.

    • Hello Garry! When in stock the Body-Solid G1S sells for around $1,000. As far as coaching goes that’s not what I do. Maybe that’s something I should do in the future but for now, there are a lot of personal trainers who provide the information you seek. Besides, there is an included Total Body Workout DVD, which covers all the exercises that can be performed on this machine.

      All the best!

  7. I’m impressed to see how many exercises are possible with the G1S. It has a lot packed into it, and I like its compact size. I used to live in the countryside, and I had no concern with space. But here, I have to be measuring anything I’m going to buy constantly. But this fits ok. Thank you!
