Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike | Best for Losing Weight Faster

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike comes with a walk-through design. It has a low-profile mid-section for easy on-and-off access. It features commercial-grade structural steel with durable powder coat paint that provides a sturdy and stable base. In addition, it comes with a self-generating power system, so you don’t have to worry about placing it near an outlet.

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 recumbent bike has a cooling mesh back and a high-density foam seat. The mesh back helps to keep you cool during your workout session. The seat adjusts fore and aft to provide the rider with the ultimate comfort. The backrest offers a reclining adjustment system as well. Furthermore, most bikes for home use don’t have this feature.

Another essential feature of a bike is its resistance. The resistance provides the rider with a smooth and intense workout session. For a smooth, solid, and intense workout, this bike comes equipped with a 30 lbs (13.6 kg) flywheel and 40 levels of magnetic resistance. In addition, the XBR95 comes with remote adjustment keys for adjusting resistance levels quickly.

The included console on the XBR95 keeps track of the RPM, Calories, Time, Distance, Pulse, Level, METs, Segment Time, Program Name, Watts, and Laps. Furthermore, the console is adjustable and includes 12 built-in workout programs to motivate exercise fun. In addition, visible are the muscle-activated LED lights that show users where the burn is going down.

XBR95 Frame Construction

Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike
Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 recumbent bike is a commercial-grade bike that features heavy-duty construction of a durable steel tubing frame. The only exception is the seat adjustment rail which is extruded aluminum. In addition, the steel parts come double-coated with a rust-resistant and scratch-resistant gray paint finish.

The XBR95 bike also integrates several plastic parts. However, their role is purely protective or cosmetic. The most notable is the seat base guards, the drive and resistance system guards, the base frame guards, and the console casing.

The bike has a step-through design. For instance, this is great, especially for users with specific disabilities, as it allows easy entry and exit. However, not all recumbent bikes have this feature, so it’s a plus.

The fully assembled bike is relatively large. It is approximately 57″ (145 cm) long and 30″ (76 cm) wide. Plus, it is advisable to allow at least two feet of clearance all around it for easy access and safe usage. The highest point of the bike is the top of the backrest, which reaches approx—50″ (127 cm) above the floor level.

In addition, the bike is also pretty heavy. Its net weight is 147 lbs (67 kg). Therefore, two people should carry and assemble the bike. But once completed, one person can quickly move the bike as its front base features a set of wheels. Also, both its base stabilizers have adjustable levelers with large rubber pads.

Seat and handlebars

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 recumbent bike comes equipped with a high-comfort seat. First of all, the seat pad is relatively large, so it provides plenty of contact surfaces. It slightly integrates a thick layer of foam cushioning and contours for improved comfort. Finally, its top is durable vinyl, easy to maintain, and sweatproof.

The backrest has a different design than most other recumbent bikes. Its frame is metallic, while its cover combines vinyl, synthetic mesh, and adjustable buckle straps. The vinyl sections improve the positioning of the backrest cover on its frame, the mesh center area gives it a good flex, and the buckle straps on the back improve its structural sturdiness.

The bike’s seat attaches to an extruded aluminum adjustment rail. It offers 14 adjustment positions, and it comfortably accommodates users between 5’0″ and 6’5″ (153 – 196 cm). The adjustment system uses a lever lock which allows you to change the seat position while seated. The seat and the backrest have a maximum user weight limit of 350 lbs (159 kg).

In addition, the backrest has an adjustment system, offering reclining possibilities. It has a hydraulic cylinder connected to a separate lever from the seat adjustment lever at the base. It allows you to adjust its angle. Furthermore, this feature is quite a plus; most home bikes don’t have this.

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 features two sets of handlebars. One attaches to the seat assembly, and the other one to the front mast of the bike. The seat handlebars integrate pulse sensors and resistance controls.

The front handlebars don’t have any controls or pulse sensors. Instead, they attach directly to the upright bar via screws, which are non-adjustable. In addition, they feature PVC foam sleeves for improved comfort.

XBR95 Resistance system

Unlike the other two Spirit Fitness XBR recumbent bikes, the Spirit Fitness XBR95 recumbent bike has a self-powered eddy current resistance system, similar to the LifeSpan R5i bike.

Therefore, you don’t need a power cord or adapter as it has an internal power generator. The generator turns the kinetic energy your pedaling creates into the power necessary to activate the bike’s resistance system and pull up the console.

The bike’s resistance system consists of a magnetic brake and a servo motor. The motor puts the bike’s console in connection with the brake. Therefore, when you adjust the resistance, or when the console adjusts the resistance automatically, the motor changes the magnets’ pull on the flywheel, which results in more or less pedaling resistance.

The magnetic resistance is a big plus for any exercise bike or elliptical trainer. The magnets don’t touch the flywheel or the other internal parts. Therefore, the brake elements have no friction and wear-and-tear, while the pedaling motion is smooth and quiet. On top of that, the self-generating power system allows you to use this bike off-grid, even when there’s a power outage.

Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike

The bike makes available 40 levels of resistance, delivering superior micro-adjustability. The lowest resistance levels offer a relatively light pedaling difficulty, which is great for users who require recovery training. Conversely, the highest tension levels provide considerably more resistance, simulating a hill climb, which is excellent for strength and stamina development.

Drive system

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 recumbent bike has a heavier flywheel than most recumbent bikes. It weighs 30 lbs (13.6 kg), providing a consistent pedaling motion. In addition, it also has a perimeter-weighted design for improved inertia.

The bike’s flywheel is bi-directional. Therefore, you can pedal in reverse as well. When pedaling in reverse, the generator continues producing the power necessary for the resistance system, and the console keeps tracking your workout data. However, coasting is not possible on the bike; the internal flywheel will stop spinning when you stop pedaling.

The Spirit XBR95 exercise bike has a belt drive system that uses a poly-v belt that is highly resistant to abrasion and stretching. The front ABS guards conceal the belt and the pulley.

There are two main advantages to the belt drive over a chain drive. First, the belt does not require lubrication, so you don’t have to remove the front guards, pedals, etc., apply lubricant, and re-assemble those parts. And two, the belt generates slightly less vibration than a chain.

The bike features a narrow Q Factor (spacing between the pedals). Due to this fact, the positioning of your feet on the pedals is pretty natural and comfortable, while the pedaling motion does not generate lateral stress on the knees and ankles.

Furthermore, the pedals have weight elements, so they always self-level when you remove your feet from them. In addition, they also have adjustable straps.

XBR95 Console

Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike
Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike

The Spirit Fitness XBR95 recumbent bike has a multi-function console. However, it’s important to note that this model does not have Bluetooth or online connectivity and is incompatible with the Spirit Fit app.

The console features a 7.5-inch LCD with a blue LED backlight. It divides into multiple sub-sections to show as many workout metrics at once, so you don’t have to press buttons to swap them manually. For example, it tracks time, speed, distance, pace, resistance level, calories, and heart rate.

The speed and distance are set to imperial units by default, but you can also put them into metrics. Furthermore, the distance displays a 1/4 mile track with a lap count indicator. In addition, the console can read your pulse either via the sensors integrated into the seat handlebars or via the included wireless HR chest strap.

Workout programs

The console makes available 12 workout programs. The first program is the Manual mode. For instance, this allows you to pedal freely, adjusting the resistance manually as you like throughout the workout.

The Hill, Fat Burn, Cardio, Strength, Interval, Calories, and Fusion are pre-set programs. Each one has a specific segment layout and will adjust the resistance accordingly for the whole duration of the program. However, you can make adjustments for all of them as well.

The last two program buttons cover two Custom User programs and two Heart Rate programs. The Custom User programs allow you to create and save two programs with the resistance adjustments of your choice. The pre-set HR programs are for 60% and 80% of the maximum heart rate, depending on your age, weight, gender, and other data.

Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike

I can count the sound system, the cooling fan, and the device holder, among other notable console features. The sound system consists of two small speakers and an AUX port at the console’s base. Thus, you can connect your phone or MP3 player to the console to play your music through the integrated speakers for better audio quality.

The fan is between the two speakers. The device holder is above the fan and large enough to accommodate most tablets.

XBR95 Assembly and Maintenance

The main body of the bike comes pre-assembled, but the rest of the parts do require user assembly. So, as a general idea, you will have to attach the two base bars, the front mast, the front handlebars, the console, the seat base, the backrest, the seat handlebars, and the pedals.

Consequently, it may take more than two hours, but the manual provides clear assembly instructions and schematics. In addition, all the tools necessary for the assembly come with the bike.

Once completed, you only have to clean it, periodically check for loose parts, and retighten them. The internal parts do not need periodic lubrication.

  1. Hello, I weigh 150kg, and I would like to lose weight; your bike seems perfect for me, with all the adjustments, for the back more precisely, and so I wanted to know is there no contraindication for my case, the 150 kg ?, I wait for your answer, thank you

    • Hi Omama, I believe you’re asking if it’s okay to use this exercise bike because of your weight. You should consult your physician if that’s what you are asking. If he says you are healthy enough to exercise to lose weight, then using the bike shouldn’t be a problem.

  2. Many thanks for this comprehensive Spirit Fitness XBR95 Recumbent Bike review. This bike is perfect for my home. I like its pulse sensors because many bikes don’t have them. There are 12 workout programs as well, which is also precious. In addition, this one has a tablet making it easy to watch videos. I’ll consider the XBR95 when I go to replace my current bike.

  3. The Spirit Fitness XBR95 bike looks like it could be just what I’ve been wanting. I have a stationary bike, but it is super uncomfortable, and my back gets sore when I’m on it too long, so I’ve been trying to find something to replace it. I love using a bike for all the cardiovascular benefits, but I think it’s time to switch to a recumbent bike.

I like the idea of having an adjustable backrest with extra cushioning in the seat, which this bike seems to have. And this one certainly looks durable enough for my whole family to use. Adding this bike to my routine could be just perfect. Thanks for your comprehensive review of it.
